THE COMPLETE ITINERARY
Day 1 & 2: Hanoi
Chaos with a Touch of Charm
Our trip kicks off in Hanoi, Vietnam’s bustling capital. It’s noisy, hectic, and yes—often a bit smoggy. At first glance, it might not seem like the most inviting place. But give it a chance, and you’ll start to uncover the city’s unique charm.
From the maze of motorbikes in the Old Quarter to peaceful moments by Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi is a city of contrasts. It’s where ancient temples sit beside trendy cafés, and street food stalls serve up flavors you’ll never forget. The energy can be overwhelming, but it’s also what makes Hanoi so unforgettable.
Want to dive deeper into the city’s highlights? From cultural landmarks to hidden gems, check out this guide to Hanoi’s must-see attractions for everything you need to know. On the first day we dit number 1,2 and 3 of the article.
Day 3: A Journey Into the Rice Fields
This eco-lodge is truly in the middle of nowhere, nestled in the heart of northern Vietnam’s Hoang Su Phi region. From here, we begin a multi-day hike through breathtaking landscapes—lush forests, cascading rice terraces, and remote ethnic villages. It’s the perfect way to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.
And the hotel itself? A hidden gem. Pan Hou Retreat offers a surprising touch of luxury in the wild—comfortable rooms, delicious meals, and a serene atmosphere that makes it an absolute recommendation for anyone seeking a more authentic and tranquil experience.
Days 4 & 5: Hiking Through Vietnam’s Rice Terraces
Over the next two days, we set out on an extensive hike through the rice fields, guided by a local expert arranged by our hotel. Thanks to their knowledge, we followed trails that felt like they had never been walked before—remote, peaceful, and completely off the tourist radar.
We stopped for lunch with local families, sharing meals in humble homes surrounded by endless green terraces. At night, we stayed in a homestay right in the middle of the rice fields, where the silence and scenery made it feel like time had slowed down.
If you're looking to experience Vietnam’s true nature and tranquility, this is an absolute must. Just be prepared—the hike includes plenty of elevation, so make sure to stretch those legs and bring some muscle balm!
Day 6: Back to Hanoi
Day 6 is another travel day. After spending time in this peaceful, remote destination, it’s time to make our way back to Hanoi. The next leg of our journey will depart from the capital, so we need to return in time to prepare for what’s coming next.
Day 7: Cruising Bai Tu Long Bay
Today is a big day—we’re going on a cruise! But not to the overly touristy Ha Long Bay (yes, it’s become a bit too crowded—just imagine sitting on a boat surrounded by a hundred others, and the charm quickly fades). Instead, we’re heading to its quieter and equally stunning counterpart: Bai Tu Long Bay.
This bay is just as beautiful, if not more so, thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and untouched nature. You’ll find yourself almost alone among towering limestone islands and emerald waters—it’s truly breathtaking.
We’re sailing with Swan Cruises, and we can absolutely recommend them. Everything is taken care of on board: delicious meals, fun activities like cooking classes, kayaking, karaoke, and even morning Tai Chi on the deck. It’s the perfect mix of relaxation, and adventure.
Day 8: From the Bay to the Rice Fields
We wake up to the peaceful waters of Bai Tu Long Bay, still gently rocking beneath us. Before heading back to shore, we make one last stop: a visit to a hidden cave, tucked into the limestone cliffs. It’s a quiet and magical moment to end our cruise.
After disembarking, we begin our journey toward Ninh Binh, but not without a cultural detour. On the way, we stop at the temples of the Dinh and Le dynasties in Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital. These temples may be modest in size, but their beautifully decorated altars and historical significance make them well worth the visit.
By late afternoon, we arrive at our hotel in Ninh Binh, where we’ll be staying for one night.
Day 9: Exploring the Beauty of Ninh Binh
On Day 9, we set out to explore the stunning surroundings of Ninh Binh—a region known for its lush rice fields framed by towering limestone mountains. The scenery here is absolutely magnificent, like something out of a dream.
Curious to know what there is to do in Ninh Binh? You can find a full overview in this guide to Ninh Binh’s top activities.
After a full day exploring the beauty of Ninh Binh, we get ready to board the night train to Hue. It’s a practical choice—traveling overnight means we save a lot of time and wake up in central Vietnam, ready for the next adventure.
Was it the most comfortable sleep? Not exactly. The train rocks and rattles through the night, and the beds are basic.
Day 10 & 11: Exploring Hué
We arrive in Hue early in the morning, ready to spend the next two days exploring this fascinating city. Hue is a large and lively place, yet it feels surprisingly European compared to Hanoi—with wide boulevards, elegant architecture, and a more relaxed pace.
Curious about what to see and do in Hue? Check out this guide to Hue’s top highlights to plan your visit.
Day 12: Scenic Drive to Hoi An – Through the Hai Van Pass
.This morning, our driver picks us up for the journey to Hoi An, but we’re not taking the fastest route—we’re taking the scenic one. The drive leads us along the famous Hai Van Pass, a winding mountain road that offers breathtaking views over the sea and lush hillsides. Every turn reveals a new postcard-worthy panorama.
As we descend from the pass, the landscape begins to shift. We’re entering a more tropical side of Vietnam, with palm trees, warmer air, and a coastal vibe we haven’t experienced yet on this trip. It feels like a whole new chapter is beginning.
Day 13 & 14: Lantern City: Hoi An
We’re spending our final days in Hoi An, the charming town famous for its colorful lanterns and postcard-perfect streets. It’s genuinely a lovely place to explore—quaint alleys, riverside cafés, and a warm, tropical vibe that’s hard to resist.
That said, be prepared: Hoi An is extremely touristy. The crowds can be intense, especially in the evenings when the lanterns light up and everyone flocks to the Ancient Town for that perfect photo.
Still, it’s a must-see destination in Vietnam. And if you want to know everything there is to discover—from hidden gems to tailor shops and night markets—check out this complete guide to Hoi An.
