EXPLORING THE BEAUTY OF NINH BINH
Ninh Binh is home to breathtaking natural beauty. Want to know the best ways to explore it? Take a look below and discover how to experience this stunning region to the fullest.
WHAT TO SEE IN NINH BINH
1. Hire a Bicycle to explore the region
One of the absolute highlights of visiting Ninh Binh is renting a bicycle and exploring the region at your own pace. It’s not just a way to get around—it’s a way to truly connect with the landscape.
As you pedal along quiet country roads, you’ll find yourself surrounded by endless rice fields, shimmering in shades of green and gold depending on the season. Rising dramatically in the background are the towering limestone cliffs, creating a surreal and cinematic backdrop that feels like something out of a fantasy film.
The terrain is mostly flat, making it accessible for all levels of cyclists, and the roads are peaceful with very little traffic. You’ll pass through local villages, wave to farmers tending their fields, and maybe even spot a few water buffalo grazing lazily by the roadside.
2. Make a Stop at Bich Dong Pagoda
While exploring Ninh Binh, be sure to make a stop at the enchanting Bich Dong Pagoda. This ancient temple complex is built directly into the side of a towering limestone cliff. Surrounded by lotus ponds and lush greenery, the pagoda blends seamlessly into the natural landscape.
3. Take a Sampan Ride – But Skip the Crowds at Tam Coc
One of the most iconic experiences in Ninh Binh is taking a sampan boat ride through the region’s stunning waterways. But here’s a tip: don’t do it on the famous Tam Coc River. While the scenery is beautiful, the charm is often lost in the sea of boats packed with tourists wearing neon life vests. It can feel more like a theme park than a peaceful nature escape.
Instead, we chose a quieter, more authentic route: a boat ride along the Thung Nang River, just next door. It’s far less crowded, and the landscape is just as breathtaking—towering limestone cliffs, lush rice fields, and serene waters.
You’ll be rowed by a local guide, and here’s something fun to watch for: they row with their feet! It’s a traditional technique unique to this region, and it’s impressive to see in action.
Even though Thung Nang is less touristy, you might still encounter a few tourist traps along the way. Some locals may ask to take your photo—just politely say no, and it won’t be a problem. Others might offer items for sale during the ride. If you’re not interested, a simple refusal is enough, and they’ll continue paddling.
At the end of the trip, it’s a kind gesture to leave a small tip. These boat rowers work long hours for very modest wages, and your appreciation goes a long way.
4. Take a Stroll Through Ninh Binh Town
While Ninh Binh is best known for its stunning natural landscapes, don’t miss the chance to explore the town itself. A casual walk through the village reveals a surprisingly vibrant local scene. You’ll come across cozy little bars, karaoke buses blasting Vietnamese hits, and charming shops selling everything from snacks to souvenirs.
It’s a great way to soak up the local atmosphere, especially in the evening when the streets come alive with lights, music, and laughter. Whether you’re looking to grab a drink, sing your heart out, or just browse through quirky stores, Ninh Binh town offers a fun and laid-back vibe that perfectly complements its peaceful surroundings.
5. Climb to Hang Mua Viewpoint
One of the most rewarding experiences in Ninh Binh is the climb to the Hang Mua Viewpoint. It’s a bit of a workout—around 500 steep stone steps lead you up the mountainside—but once you reach the top, the view is absolutely worth it.
From the summit, you’re treated to a panoramic view over the valley, with rice fields stretching out below and dramatic limestone cliffs rising all around. On a clear day, it’s nothing short of spectacular. Sadly, we had cloudy weather, so the view was a bit muted—but even then, the atmosphere was magical.
If you’re up for the climb, bring water, wear good shoes, and take your time. The path splits near the top, leading to different viewpoints—including a pagoda and the famous dragon statue perched on the ridge.

Our hotel stay
During our time in Ninh Binh, we stayed at the beautiful Le Clos du Fil—a charming boutique hotel tucked right in the center of town. Surrounded by peaceful rice fields and dramatic limestone cliffs, it’s the perfect blend of local craftsmanship and quiet luxury.
One of the best perks? Bicycles are available for guests, which makes it incredibly easy to head out and explore the countryside at your own pace. Whether you're cycling to nearby pagodas or just cruising through the rice paddies, it adds a wonderful sense of freedom to your stay.
