TULUM
Tulum is one of the most iconic and beloved destinations in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula—and for good reason. This coastal town blends ancient history, turquoise waters, lush jungle, and a laid-back bohemian vibe that attracts travelers from all over the world.
Read on to discover what you can do in and around Tulum—and how to make the most of your visit.
WHAT TO DO AROUND TULUM
1. Rent a Bike and Explore Tulum
Whether you're staying in Tulum Pueblo or near Tulum Beach, renting a bike is one of the best ways to get around. Tulum is quite spread out, and having a bike makes it much easier—and way more fun—to explore at your own pace. Cruise through charming streets, stop at cozy cafés or local restaurants, and soak up the relaxed vibe of this tropical town. It’s not just practical—it’s part of the experience!
2. Swim with Sea Turtles in Akumal
Akumal is famous for its sea turtles, which come close to shore to graze on the seagrass. It’s a magical experience to swim alongside them—but keep in mind that you can no longer do this independently. To protect the turtles and their habitat, swimming is now only allowed as part of an organized tour.
If you’ve snorkeled with turtles before, this might feel a bit more restricted compared to past experiences. Still, it’s worth it—especially if you book through the official diving school. To get there, drive all the way to the end of the road and ignore the pushy vendors along the way. Parking is easy, and the diving school organizes small, respectful groups.
Bonus: once your tour is over, you’re allowed to stay and relax on the beach. And it’s a beautiful one!
3. Spend a Day (or Half) at a Beach Bar
Tulum is packed with beach bars, offering everything from laid-back boho vibes to upscale luxury. With so many options, you’re truly spoiled for choice—but keep in mind that some places can be quite pricey. It’s a good idea to do a bit of research beforehand to find one that suits your budget and style.
We chose Selina Tulum, and it was a great pick! The prices were very reasonable, the beach beds were super comfortable, and the atmosphere was relaxed yet lively. Bonus: Selina is also a hotel, so if you fall in love with the place, you can stay overnight too.
4. Discover Tulum Pueblo: The Laid-Back Heart of Tulum
If you’re looking for a more relaxed and authentic vibe, Tulum Pueblo is the place to be. Compared to the glitzy beach zone, the town center offers a much more laid-back atmosphere. Wander through its colorful streets, admire the vibrant graffiti art, and soak up the local charm.
Tulum Pueblo is also home to plenty of cozy bars and delicious restaurants—often at a fraction of the price you'd pay at Tulum Beach. Whether you're grabbing tacos from a street vendor or sipping cocktails in a hidden courtyard, you'll find great value and warm hospitality around every corner.
5. Visit the Tulum Ruins: History with a View
No trip to Tulum is complete without exploring its famous archaeological site. Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea, the Tulum ruins offer a breathtaking blend of history and natural beauty. This ancient Mayan city was once a thriving port and holds impressive structures like El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God.
It’s an easy site to explore on foot, and early morning visits are ideal to avoid the heat and crowds. Don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, and your camera—the views are spectacular. And if you’re up for it, you can even walk down to the beach right below the ruins for a refreshing swim.
HOTEL AND RESTO TIPS
Our hotel stay
Tulum offers an incredible variety of accommodations, so it really depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for.
Tulum Pueblo is located a bit further inland, but it’s more budget-friendly and has a charming, laid-back vibe. In the evenings, the town comes alive with colorful streets, cozy bars, and affordable restaurants—perfect for travelers who want to explore, eat local, and soak up authentic culture.
Tulum Beach, on the other hand, sits right on the coast and is ideal for those craving a beach-focused getaway. The atmosphere is more upscale, and prices—both for hotels and dining—tend to be higher. Think chic beach clubs, boutique hotels, and stylish restaurants with ocean views.
If your goal is to explore the region, visit ruins, cenotes, and nearby towns, Tulum Pueblo is a great base. But if you're dreaming of lazy beach days and sunset cocktails by the sea, Tulum Beach might be your spot.
We personally stayed in Tulum Pueblo, in hotel Copal Tulum and loved the relaxed vibe and easy access to everything.
