THE HIKE
The PR8 trail in Madeira, officially known as Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, is one of the island’s most spectacular hikes, taking you through the wild and windswept eastern tip of Madeira. Unlike the lush forests and mountainous interior, this part of the island offers a dramatic, semi-arid landscape shaped by volcanic rock, steep cliffs, and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean on both sides. The trail begins at Baía d’Abra and stretches about 7.5 kilometers round trip, with a total elevation gain of approximately 533 meters. It’s a moderately challenging hike, with gentle slopes, some stairs, and a few steeper sections, making it suitable for most walkers with a basic level of fitness.
As you follow the path, you’ll pass through a protected nature reserve that’s home to rare plant species and seabirds like Cory’s shearwaters and Bulwer’s petrels. The scenery is constantly changing, with viewpoints such as Miradouro de São Lourenço offering stunning photo opportunities early in the hike. The trail eventually leads to Casa do Sardinha, a small rest area with a café, and from there you can continue to Miradouro Ponta do Furado, the final viewpoint overlooking nearby islets and the endless ocean — a truly breathtaking sight. If you’re up for it, there’s also a small beach nearby, Praia do Sardinha, perfect for a refreshing swim or even a kayak or snorkel tour.
Getting to the trailhead is easy by car, with parking available, and it’s about a 35-minute drive from Funchal. Public transport is also an option via SAM bus line 113, or you can book a transfer from nearby towns like Santa Cruz or Caniço. Keep in mind that there’s little shade along the route, so sun protection and plenty
