THE HIKE

The trail begins at the Queimadas Forest Park near Santana, a peaceful area with picnic tables, restrooms, and a charming stone house that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale. From here, the path follows the historic levada — an 18th-century irrigation channel — for 6,5 kilometers one way, making it a 13 km round trip. The route is mostly flat, with a gentle elevation gain of around 100 meters, and takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the scenery.

As you walk, you’re surrounded by the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest, a dense and vibrant ecosystem filled with moss-covered trees, ferns, and wildflowers. The levada itself guides you along narrow paths carved into the mountainside, with dramatic views of deep valleys and towering cliffs. You’ll pass several tunnels — some quite long and dark — so a flashlight or phone light is essential. The sound of running water and birdsong accompanies you throughout, creating a serene and immersive experience.

After about two hours, you’ll reach the highlight of the hike: the Caldeirão Verde waterfall. This stunning cascade plunges nearly 100 meters into a natural pool, surrounded by steep rock walls and lush greenery. It’s the perfect spot to rest, enjoy a snack, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Some hikers choose to continue on to Caldeirão do Inferno, a more challenging extension, but we decided to turn back here and retrace our steps to Queimadas.

The return journey is just as magical — walking back through the forest with the light shifting and the views unfolding in reverse gives you a whole new appreciation for the landscape. It’s a long walk, so be sure to bring enough water, snacks, and layers for changing weather. Even though the trail is well-maintained, it can be slippery in places, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is a must.

All in all, PR9 is a must-do hike for anyone visiting Madeira. It’s suitable for most fitness levels, offers incredible natural beauty, and gives you a true taste of the island’s unique forest ecosystem.
