THE HIKE

Preparation for the Lago di Sorapis hike

To begin your hike, it’s best to drive to the following coordinates: 46.55631953417495, 12.204549996088456. Along this stretch, you’ll find several spots where you can park your car safely by the roadside.

Make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks—we even packed a full lunch to enjoy by the lake, which was a perfect way to take in the scenery.

Dress in layers. The trail starts off in the forest, where it can feel quite chilly, especially in the morning. But as you hike and gain elevation, you’ll warm up quickly. A light jacket, breathable base layers, and sturdy shoes will keep you comfortable throughout the journey.

Details of the hike

The hike starts off winding through a dense forest, where the morning air can feel quite chilly. Dressing in layers is key—you’ll warm up quickly as the trail begins to climb. The path is well-marked and gradually opens up to reveal sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.

As you progress, the terrain becomes more varied. You’ll encounter narrow ledges, rocky sections, and even a few metal steps and cables to assist you along steeper parts. While the hike isn’t overly technical, it does require sure footing and a bit of stamina.

Eventually, the forest gives way to open alpine meadows and dramatic cliffs. And then, like a hidden treasure, Lago di Sorapis appears—its surreal turquoise waters nestled between towering peaks. The lake’s color is almost otherworldly, caused by glacial minerals suspended in the water.

It’s the perfect spot to rest, enjoy a snack, or even unpack a full lunch by the shore. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery make it a highlight of any Dolomites trip.

After soaking in the views, you’ll retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The descent is quicker but still requires attention, especially on the steeper sections. By the time you return to your car, you’ll feel the satisfying tiredness that only a day in the mountains can bring.
