THE HIKE
The hike starts near the Sima Hydroelectric Power Station, and from the very beginning, it’s clear this isn’t a casual stroll. The trail climbs steeply through forested terrain, and you’ll need to navigate ladders, ropes, and rocky sections along the way. It’s a short hike in terms of distance, but the elevation gain and technical parts make it moderately challenging. Good hiking shoes and a bit of courage are definitely recommended.
Despite the effort, the reward is incredible. Once you reach the top, you’re greeted with panoramic views over the fjord and valley — a sight that feels almost surreal. Standing there, it’s hard to believe that people once lived in this isolated spot year-round. Until the 1970s, the only way to reach Kjeåsen was by foot, using the same trail we hiked today.
If the hike sounds too intense, there’s an alternative: you can drive up to the viewpoint via a narrow, single-lane tunnel. However, this tunnel operates on a timed schedule — certain hours are reserved for driving up, and others for coming down. It’s important to check the current timetable before heading out to avoid getting stuck or causing traffic issues.
Whether you choose to hike or drive, visiting Kjeåsen is a truly memorable experience. The combination of dramatic nature, local history, and stunning views makes it one of the highlights of the Eidfjord region
