THE HIKE

About the hike

Waking up at the foot of Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, is something special. We stayed overnight right at the start of the trail, which turned out to be the perfect decision. It meant we could enjoy an early breakfast and hit the trail just as the sun began to rise—casting golden light over the cliffs and canyons. Starting the hike with the morning glow and crisp mountain air was absolutely magical.

We began bundled up in jackets and long trousers, but as the sun climbed higher, the temperature rose quickly. Layers were peeled off, sunglasses came on, and the day unfolded beautifully.

The hike itself is known as the Balcony Walk, a rim trail that hugs the edge of Oman’s “Grand Canyon,” Wadi Ghul. It’s an out-and-back route, meaning you follow the same path to return. The full trail is around 10 kilometers round trip, and depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the views, it takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete.

Navigation is easy: just follow the painted flags—typically yellow, white, and red—marked on rocks along the way. These trail markers are clear and frequent, so it’s nearly impossible to get lost.

Most hikers turn around at the abandoned stone houses, perched dramatically on the cliffside. But if you’re up for a little extra adventure, continue just a bit further. After a short climb and some light scrambling, you’ll reach a small hidden oasis—a lush surprise tucked into the rocky terrain. It takes a bit of searching, but the reward is worth it: shade, greenery, and a moment of quiet far from the world below.

Where to stay before the hike

You might be wondering where we spent the night before our Jebel Shams hike. We stayed at Sama Heritage Home Al Khutaim, a simple but charming mountain lodge that turned out to be the perfect base. The biggest bonus? It’s located right at the start of the Balcony Walk, so we could roll out of bed, grab an early breakfast, and hit the trail with the rising sun.

The rooms are basic but clean, and the atmosphere is peaceful—ideal for a good night’s rest before a big hike. Both breakfast and dinner are included in the price, which makes it a great value, especially considering the remote location.

Lunch after the hike

After finishing the hike, there’s no better way to recharge than with a relaxed lunch at Cliff Café. You’ll pass it naturally on your drive back from the trail, and it’s the perfect stop to rest your legs and reflect on the morning’s adventure.

The menu is simple—think sandwiches, snacks, and drinks—but the real highlight is the spectacular view over the canyon. With outdoor seating perched near the edge, you can soak in the dramatic landscape one last time while enjoying something light and refreshing.

It’s a laid-back spot with friendly service, and a great way to end your Jebel Shams experience on a high note—literally.
