IZAMAL: MEXICO'S YELLOW CITY
Tucked away in the heart of Yucatán, Izamal is a place that feels like it stepped out of a storybook. Known as La Ciudad Amarilla—the Yellow City—this charming colonial town is bathed in golden hues, with nearly every building painted a warm mustard yellow. It’s no wonder Izamal is recognized as one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, a title given to towns with exceptional cultural, historical, and natural beauty
HOW TO GET THERE?
Izamal is about an hour’s drive from Mérida and roughly 1.5 hours from Valladolid. It’s a perfect stopover if you’re traveling between these cities.
WANDERING THROUGH IZAMAL
Izamal’s cobblestone streets and colonial architecture are a delight to explore. Stroll throught the yellow streets and make a stop at the next two spots:
-
Convento de San Antonio de Padua: This stunning 16th-century convent is the crown jewel of Izamal. Built atop a former Mayan pyramid, it boasts one of the largest open atriums in the world. The views from the elevated site are breathtaking, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it perfect for reflection or photography.
-
Kinich Kakmó Pyramid: Just a short walk from the center, this massive pyramid dedicated to the Mayan sun god is free to visit—and yes, you can climb it! The panoramic view from the top stretches across the town and surrounding jungle. It’s a bit of a workout, but totally worth it
