THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN TRAVELLING TO ICELAND
Decided to travel to Iceland? Great choice! Below you'll find all the essential tips you need before you go, so you won’t be caught off guard once your adventure begins.
When to travel?
When planning a trip to Iceland, timing is everything. The best moment to travel depends on what you want to experience.
If you're dreaming of long days, lush landscapes, and mild weather, summer—especially June to August—is ideal. During this time, the midnight sun lights up the sky, giving you nearly 24 hours of daylight to explore waterfalls, volcanoes, and glaciers.
However, if witnessing the magical Northern Lights is your goal, winter is the season to go. From late September to March, the nights are long and dark, creating perfect conditions for aurora viewing. Just be prepared for cold temperatures and shorter days.
Budget?
Iceland is truly a stunning destination, but it's important to know that it can be quite expensive. Hotel prices often start around €150 per night, so keep that in mind when planning your budget. Food is also pricier compared to some other European countries. To save money, we often grabbed lunch from the supermarket or cooked dinner ourselves in our accommodation. These small adjustments helped us enjoy Iceland without overspending.
Rent a car!
Renting a car is essential when visiting Iceland. It gives you the freedom to explore the country’s breathtaking landscapes at your own pace—from majestic waterfalls to remote fjords. However, if you're planning to venture into more isolated areas, be aware that not all rental cars are allowed on certain roads, especially the rugged F-roads in the Highlands. These routes often require a 4x4 vehicle, and driving there without proper authorization can void your insurance.
Always check with your rental company in advance to make sure your car is suitable for your planned itinerary. Clear communication will help you avoid unexpected costs and ensure a safe journey through Iceland’s wild beauty.
