THE HIKE
The hike to Boca do Risco begins just outside the charming village of Porto da Cruz, located on Madeira’s north coast. From here, the trail gently climbs through forested sections and open cliffside paths, always accompanied by the sound of the ocean and sweeping views of the Atlantic. The route is about 10 kilometers round trip, with a total elevation gain of around 240 meters, making it accessible for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
The path itself is mostly flat, with only a few short stair sections, and it’s well-maintained though not heavily marked — using a hiking app like Maps.me is recommended. As you walk, you’ll pass through patches of native vegetation, colorful wildflowers, and dramatic cliff edges that plunge hundreds of meters into the sea. The contrast between the deep blue water and the vibrant green cliffs is breathtaking, and it’s easy to see why Madeira is often called the “Hawaii of Europe.”
After about 4 kilometers, you’ll reach the Boca do Risco viewpoint, a wide open platform offering panoramic views of the coastline stretching toward Machico and beyond. This is the perfect spot to take a break, snap some photos, and soak in the raw beauty of Madeira’s north shore. From here, some hikers choose to continue toward Machico, but if you don’t have transport arranged at the other end, it’s best to turn around and retrace your steps back to Porto da Cruz.
This hike is ideal for those looking to escape the busier trails and enjoy a quieter, more intimate experience with Madeira’s coastal nature. It’s especially beautiful in the morning or late afternoon when the light enhances the colors of the cliffs and sea. There’s limited shade along the route, so bring sun protection, water, and snacks — and don’t forget your camera!
